CBCP Post Election Statement

Brothers and sisters in Christ:

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me…” (Mt. 28:18)

This is the Lord Jesus’ ultimate claim to universal kingship and dominion. These are the words of the Ascended One, gloriously sitting at the right hand of the Father.

We wrote to you before the elections. We write to you once more now that the elections are done.

Several critical, even spiteful, voices have asked us to desist from “interfering” in politics. We cannot. We do not aspire after office and we have sought none. We do not even impose upon the Catholic faithful a set of anointed candidates. But it would be a denial of Christ’s universal lordship were we to desist from reminding his disciples of what fidelity to him — in all things, including political life — demands.

The votes have been cast and are now being counted.

To those who have been voted to office, we assure them of our prayers, principally for wisdom, that they may discern God’s will for his people and courageously do as he bids. God’s hand is to be recognized in the events of history. Credit then your victory, neither to fame nor popularity, but to God who calls you to service and to care for the weakest and the most distressed in our midst. Children need care that cannot be postponed. And many women still find themselves in situations of exploitation. Indigenous peoples remain marginalized and the vaunted growth in the economy still has to mean something significant for Filipinos living outside urban areas.

To those who did not succeed, you, as persons, as sons and daughters of God, are infinitely so much more than the positions after which you aspired. Rather than becoming despondent and discouraged, you should challenge yourselves by asking how it is that the Risen Lord sends you “to make disciples of all nations”. Surely there are so many other ways to contribute to the building of the Kingdom of God. It is for you to discover your paths, in faith and in docility to God’s spirit.

The greatest promise the Church can offer any government is vigilant collaboration, and that offer, we make now. We will urge our people to work with the government for the good of all, and we shall continue to be vigilant so that ever so often we may speak out to teach and to prophesy, to admonish and to correct — for this is our vocation.

Get up now let us go…

YOUCAT(58) What does it mean to say that man was created “in God’s image”?

Unlike inanimate objects, plants, and animals, man is a person endowed with a spirit. This characteristic unites him with God more than with his visible fellow creatures. [355-357,380]

Man is not something but rather a someone. Just as we say about God that he is person, so too we as this about man. Man can think beyond his immediate horizon and measure the whole breadth of being; he  can even know himself with critical objectivity and work  to improve himself; he can perceive others as persons, understand them in their dignity, and love them. Of all the visible creatures, man alone is “able to know and love his creator” (Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et Spes {GS} 12,3) Man is destined to live with him in friendship (Jn 15:15).

YOUCAT(61) In What Does the Equality of All Men Consist?

All men are equal in as much as they have the same origin in the one creative love of God. All men have their savior in Jesus Christ. All men are destined to find their happiness and their eternal blessedness in God.[360-361]

Hence all men are brothers and sisters. Christians should practice solidarity not only with other Christians but with everyone and forcefully oppose racist, sexist and economic divisions in the one human family.

YOUCAT(60) Why is Jesus the Greatest example in the World?

Jesus Christ is unique because He shows us not only God’s true nature but also the true ideal of man. [358-359,381]

Jesus was more than ideal man. Even seemingly ideal men are sinners. That is why no man can be the measure of humanity. Jesus, however, was without sin. We cannot know what it means to be a man, and what makes man INFINITELY LOVABLE in the truest sense of the word, except in Jesus Christ, who “in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sinning” (Heb 4:15). Jesus , the Son of God, is the authentic, true man.In Him we recognize how God willed man to be.

YOUCAT(59) Why Did God Make Man?

God made everything for man. Man, however, who is “the only creature on earth that God has willed for its own sake” (GS 24,3), was created in order to be blessed. This happens when he knows, loves, and serves God and lives in gratitude toward his Creator. [358]

Gratitude is love that has been acknowledged. Someone who is grateful turns freely to the giver of the good and enters into a new, deeper relationship with him. God wishes us to acknowledge his love and even now to live our whole life in relation with him. This relationship lasts forever.

Listen with your heart! Saint Anthony was born at Lisbon, Portugal. He bacame a canon regular and then a Franciscan preaching the Gospel everywhere in Portugal and Italy. Both as a theologian and as a popular preacher he fought vigorously against heresy. His preaching was inspired by the love of God and of souls and had an extraordinary power of conviction; it was filled with the penetrating power of the Bible. Pope Gregory IX, who heard him preach, called him during his lifetime the Arca Testamenti, meaning "the living repository of the Holy Scriptures" and Pope Pius XII, when he proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, declared that he based all that he said on the texts of the Gospels, and could justly be called the Evangelical Doctor.
Saint Anthony lived for a time in France, but chiefly in Italy, and died at Padua in 1231 at age 36, with the reputation of great sanctity. From the day of his death innumerable miracles caused the faithful to invoke him as a wonderworker of untiring benevolence.
